December 1: Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz
- Honored to receive the McArthur award
- You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with
- It’s all about the environment you’re in
- Make sure you get good advice from people any time you’re going to change direction
- Was athletic trainer for Steelers and he didn’t like the way the league was handling concussions
- Then moved on the UVA
- Concussions research became his passion while he had experiences there
- Debate about whether concussions required rehab
- 1996 surgeon general came out with a report that kids needed to be pushed into exercise
- There were suddenly going to be overuse injuries
- There was a need to increase sports-related injury research
- In all areas
- Cases of athletes dying after concussions
- It took these deaths for people to wake up and look at these injuries
- Trickle- down effect
- If the care is not done correctly on the elite levels , it won’t be done correctly at levels in which kids participate
- Research for the sake of research is useless
- Research should be done to improve something in society
- Costs associated with traumatic brain injury
- 3.8 million sport related TBI annually
- $56.3 billion in direct and indirect costs
- A helmet does not prevent concussions
- The brain is like egg yolk inside of an egg
- The helmet can prevent skull fracture but not movement of the brain
- The better we make the helmets, the more the head can be used as a weapon
- The league is trying to change rules to make the game safer
- Less than 10% of all concussions involve loss of consciousness
- We need to start focusing on the prevention side rather than getting to the injury assessment side
- Started a helmet and a mouth guard system to measure impact
- The brain can withstand a large number of impacts without clinically distinguishable injury
- Most dangerous hits occur on special teams plays and hits to the top of the head
- But what are the long term effects?
- Center for the Study of Retired Athletes
- Increased risk of depression
- Behavior modification is the best choice in concussion prevention
- Ability to transfer TBI research to the military
- Gfeller-Waller Concussion Law
